Seattle Film Works · Mar 28, 08:55 AM by Dylan Doxey

I recently discovered an archive of SFW files among some old CD ROMs.
Naturally I’m wondering what these files are, and why I thought they were worth backing up to a CD in 1999.

These are Seattle Film Works proprietary image files. Seattle Film Works was (is) a mail order film processing service which, upon request, will ship floppy discs along with your developed photos. The floppies contain SFW images which are read by the proprietary Seattle Film Works software.

However, now that I’m a Linux user, that leaves me wondering if there is an alternative.
The answer is a resounding “YES”, thanks to Everett Lipman.

See http://www.lipman.org/software/sfw/ for an explanation, and a link to download source code and binaries.
I copied the binary sfwjpg to my /usr/local/bin and I was immediately able to start converting my SFW files to JPGs.

It was really quick and painless!

Thanks Everett!
